All about us

A partnership to benefit schools, kids

Missouri River Adopt-A-Fish got its start in 2002 as a cooperative effort to spread the word on fisheries biology and ongoing studies of native fish species in Montana's Missouri River, below Fort Peck Dam, and North Dakota's stretch of the Missouri, above Lake Sakakawea. In 2006, we added the lower reaches of the Yellowtone River in Montana to track additional species fitted with radios, hence the name change to Missouri-Yellowstone Adopt-A-Fish.

It's totally an educational effort aimed at schools -- both big and small. To us, it's all about biology and kids. There are no political agendas here. We leave politics to the politicians.

Ongoing and future studies on the Missouri River are being funded by federal dollars and personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. State dollars and personnel came from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Web space and page-building from private organizations like Montana PikeMasters and Walleyes Forever also helped spearhead the project. Coming on as a partner in this project, as well, was the Billings Gazette which is helping us to further publicize Missouri-Yellowstone Adopt-A-Fish across Eastern Montana.
