How to adopt a fish

It's really, really easy

Any school can formally participate in Missouri-Yellowstone Adopt-A-Fish and anyone can follow the fish on the website.

In 2006, you will not only be able to follow the movements of paddlefish, blue suckers, and pallid sturgeon that were implanted with transmitters in the Missouri River as students have in past years, but we will be adding shovelnose sturgeon, channel catfish and burbot (ling) that were tagged in the Yellowstone River.

The first thing you need to do is have your school class pick the two fish species that it wants to follow. They can be two different species or two fish of the same species.

So, pick your two fish:
      Blue sucker
      Burbot
      Channel catfish
      Paddlefish
      Pallid sturgeon
      Shovelnose sturgeon

Next, have your class choose a name for each fish it wants to adopt. Be original in your name-picking.

Then, have your teacher or principal write an e-mail that includes:

-- Your school name, street or rural route address, town, state and zip code
-- Your grade (or grades, if it's a one-room school),
-- The number of students in the class,
-- The teacher's name (just to have somebody's name instead of e-mailing back to "Hey you!"),
-- The two fish species you want to adopt (or one species where you want to adopt two fish),
-- The two names of your fish
Put "Adopt-A-Fish" in the subject line of the e-mail and send it to:

We'll e-mail you back and confirm your choices. We'll send you a packet with some teaching aids for the program. We'll also send you periodic updates throughout the program and may ask how things are going at your school or if there is anything we can do to help. Your e-mail addresses will remain confidential.
