Empowering Dalit Children through Education

Helping Dalit
children of India

Information on this page was received from Fr. Maria Joseph, a Jesuit priest in India, and describes the plight of India's Dalit adults and children.

Dalits were once known as, and treated as, "Untouchables" in India.

Schools have been set up to help young Dalits better their lives and lift themselves out of poverty.

The cost of sponsoring a student in one of these schools for a full year is just $100 U.S. dollars. One of our goals will be to help as many of these students as we can. -- Fr. Mariusz

According to government statistics:

Every one hour, 2 Dalits are under attack.
Every day, 3 Dalit women are raped.
Every day, 2 Dalits are killed.
Every day, 2 huts belonging to Dalits are burned.

CHENGAI JESUIT MISSION is a recent initiative of the Jesuit Madurai Province, Tamilnadu State, India. It is special mission among the Dalits, who were earlier known and treated as Untouchables in India.

Hence, the Jesuits have opted to serve these people in the Northern Region of Tamilnadu State in a special way so as to eradicate untouchability and poverty among the Dalits.

The dropout rate is very high among the Dalits at high school level. The situation is even worse in the target area of the Chengai Jesuit Mission. It is due to repeated monsoon failures and as a result the poor Dalits who depend upon agricultural labour for their sustenance are without any job opportunities. They struggle to meet their daily needs. Education of the Dalit children is the major casuality due to this recurring problem.

Our Response

It is in this context, there is a need to provide some sort of additional support to Dalit children to pursue their studies. The additional support is all the more imperative in the context of globalization where the competition spirit is high. Educating the Dalit children by providing hostel facility is the best way of resolving this crisis.

Loyola Higher Secondary School at Kuppayanallur was started with the sole motive to educate the poor Dalit children. In order to promote education among the Dalit children from remote villages, Gracy Home for girls and Loyola Home for boys were started with the support our Province administration and some friends from abroad. Loyola School is totally unaided by the government. After studying the successful performance of the students, the mission has started hostels in other areas. The children who stay at the hostels hail from very poor families; as a result, they are not in a position to pay their boarding and lodging fees. The increase in the number of beneficiaries has increased our financial burden. The financial burden is forcing us to find sponsors to continue this noble venture.
