PikeMasters president
Tom Reiter
May, 2007

Hello PikeMasters!

Spring has finally arrived. I just hope most of you have taken advantage of the warm weather to enjoy a few days on the water. Unfortunately, I have been extremely busy getting a new business started. Long days and short nights make Tom a very tired boy! The only thing keeping me going is the fact that I do enjoy my new occupation. If I can’t be fishing, the next best thing is working on boats so other people can enjoy fishing. Although most of us fishermen absolutely despise water-skiers, I have to admit that a lot of the boats that I work on are definitely ski boats. These ski boat owners are just as passionate about their water sport as we fishermen are about ours. However, I still despise skiers when I am trying to fish! I don’t even want to get into what I think of the jet skiers! It is very tempting to make a few wrong adjustments whenever I have to work on any of those noisy, obnoxious, pieces of machinery. Fortunately my good sense of professionalism over-rules my crafty sense of humor!

Over the years, I have made lots of good friends who have taken jobs out of state. Last week one of those friends stopped to see me at work. It was certainly a surprise when Scott Hauck and his son Andrew walked in the door. Scott and I have shared more than a few excellent fishing and hunting adventures over the years. Scott moved his family to Houston, Texas eight years ago. He has not forgotten his friends in Billings, and hopes to retire back here in a few years. Andrew is working here in Billings at the Chevrolet dealership as a service technician. They are both members of Pikemasters. Now that I know that Andrew is in town, I plan to see if he can catch more fish than his dad!

I hope to see most of our members at our Thursday, May 3rd, meeting. Nominations for new officers will be taken at the May and June meetings. Ballots will be mailed to all members after the June meeting. All ballots must be returned to Pikemasters by mail or delivered to Joe at the July meeting. I must say that serving a term as an officer in this organization is something that all members should experience. I have made many new friends because I have been an officer the past 3 years. We have a super reputation in this state because of the hard work ethics of every member of this club. We preach common sense in all issues, and are always willing to help other clubs. I am sure these principles will continue with the new officers.

Bob Dolly has reminded me to ask that anyone who has old rods and reels that they no longer use can donate them to Pikemasters. We will recondition them and use them at our Kid’s Fishing Day, or donate them to Camp Make-a-Dream. Please bring them to the meetings.

I have also been asked to try to recruit helpers for Mark Goyette and his Laurel Middle School Fishing Club. The club is going to Tongue River Res. next Saturday, May 5th. Last fall Mark escorted over thirty kids to Tongue. He certainly deserves all the help Pikemasters can provide. What better way is there than to spend a Saturday helping kids catch a fish?

See you all at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3rd, at the Elks.

Good luck in your fishing,

                             -- Tom Reiter

P.S. I will give a short demo on the use of slip bobbers before the meeting.
