Be sure to come to our post holiday party
on Jan. 6

January, 2006

I'd never have guessed that I would be happy to sit down at this keyboard on Christmas, but today has been the perfect day. I can't think of a better way to bring it to an end than to have a one-sided conversation with all of my friends in our club.

Christmas dinner is digesting and all the good sports shows on television are over. Tanner and Thomas are shooting their new paintball guns at the neighbor's cows, my wife's dogs and their sister. I'm sure the prairie dog town in the pasture next door will furnish lots of new targets for tomorrow. Can you imagine what our local FWP biologist will think if he sees pink or chartreuses prairie dogs running around? My brother has been warned about any strange colors in his cows. I hope all of you have also had a good day, while enjoying your own sons, daughters and grandchildren.

I can't believe another year has passed already. Our club has grown not only in size, but also most importantly, in stature. Our ability to work with other groups and entities, such as Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Walleyes Unlimited and the State Parks people, has proven that more can be accomplished through cooperation than arguing. Our reputation as a charitable organization has been brought to the forefront. We have received Christmas cards from appreciative people at both Camp Make-A-Dream and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Both of these fine charities will be represented at our upcoming banquet.

Our banquet committee has planning for our banquet ahead of schedule. Thanks to a lot of effort by these hard-working members, the banquet could be held next week without any worries. Lots of support has already come to us from several businesses around town. I want to urge all members to request donations from anyone they know in the business community. I have found that most companies are happy to donate to a charitable cause. If any of you have any input concerning new ideas for the banquet, feel free to voice your opinion at any time. New ideas or help is always welcome.

New members need to be recognized. I want to welcome Will Suralski and Brian Pennington to Pike Masters. Will owns the Minnow Bucket in Huntley and Brian commutes to Billings from the Columbus area each day while truck for FSA. Brian has been a great partner of mine at the Governor's Cup for the last few years. I want to give a big PikeMasters welcome to both of you.

At the November meeting, we discussed the possibility of having a post-holiday party. Due to the construction mess at my home, it was decided that the party will be held at the Hog Wild Café - the Party Pig folks - on Friday, Jan. 6. Dean has been a great supporter of the club and its events and has offered the entire facility to Pike Masters for the evening. He will cater a delicious steak and shrimp meal. The cost is $15 per person. Dean needs to know how many people to plan for. I ask that everyone planning to attend, please call one of the following members before Jan. 1 to put your names on the list. Call either Tom Reiter (yes, that's me) at 628-7010, Peggy Lawver at 855-8432 or Mike Spear at 248-1226.

Please plan on attending our next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Eagles. Lots of new business to cover concerning sports show schedules, a new deal on fishing reels from Big R Stores, updates on the Fort Peck Hatchery and an ice fishing seminar by Clayton Sorenson and Bob Koch.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you!

Good luck in your fishing,

                             -- Tom Reiter
