Fishing season is now upon us! Perhaps I should re-phrase that statement. Trophy fishing season is now here! Large fish of all species have put on the feed-bag before the first ice forms. I am sure some of you have mistakenly let hunting season cause dust to form on your boats. I hope those unfortunate individuals get their priorities straight before early ice forms! I must say that I fell into this category for a good many years until I finally realized that it is much easier to drag out a trophy fish than a trophy elk! I must also admit that any pike or walleye also tasted much better than the last elk I had to carry three miles out to my truck!
I have found the perfect solution to this dilemma for the fishing-hunting sportsman. A jet boat large enough to haul out an elk, or in my case, one of Tanner’s fish, is the perfect way to enjoy a true sportsman’s weekend. The whitetail, walleye, sauger, and northerns on the lower Yellowstone have given my kids and I several enjoyable days this fall. In the next few weeks, we also plan to put the hurt on lots of ducks and geese.
I guess that I should also mention that an 18lb. rainbow trout was caught by a member of my family last weekend. Before someone sends a nasty letter to Tanner, I should confess to everyone that I am that lucky family member! Yep, I now have two 18lb. + rainbows to my credit. What a way to break-in my new jet boat on the Missouri! My son Thomas called last night just to remind me that it has been two years since I have landed a northern pike. He had to bring that up! Time to get on with the business at hand.
I want to welcome a couple new members to Montana Pikemasters. Roger Johnston, a past president of the local Walleyes Unlimited chapter, has joined us. Roger is a well-known fisherman in the Billings area. I know Roger and his wife will enjoy our club in the years ahead.
I also want to offer a big Pikemaster’s welcome to Brian Sanger. Brian is the current president of the Muskies Inc. chapter in Nebraska. Brian is originally from Billings. He has generously offered to help us in any way possible. When new members from other states make an offer such as this, it brings lots of ideas to my wandering mind…..Muskies
…..Nebraska…..new water…..road trips….. My wife is giving me that look again! At any rate, I also want to offer Brian and Muskies Inc. any assistance needed from our club in their projects.
I have been considering making a few procedural changes at our monthly meetings. We have formed committees to help in completing our various projects. These committees need to report to the membership at our monthly meetings. Everyone will have an opportunity to vote on the committee recommendations. As your president, I am always open to any new ideas. At Thursday’s meeting, these changes will be implemented.
Our Canada trip and a possible tournament at Tiber will be discussed along with new ideas for our banquet. I certainly hope to see all of you at our meeting Thursday, November 2, 2006 at the Elks. This will be an important meeting for us all.
Good luck in your fishing,
-- Tom Reiter
