We have a new meeting site
at the Elks Club

May, 2006

If you cup your ear on a warm night, point it towards the northeast, and listen carefully, you can hear the pike and walleyes bugling during their spawning runs up on Ft. Peck! At least I can hear them. My wife is now looking at me in a strange way and shaking her head. I guess most wives just don't understand some of the spring rituals in Montana! Before I get banished to my boat in the garage, I'd better not get too carried away so - on with this months' newsletter.

Our club continues to grow at a rapid pace. I want to take time to welcome all the new members who have joined in the last two months. Here is our latest list of new friends:

Wesley Berry
Gregory Sadorf
Brian Ellis
Dean Ellis
Vince Pernicano - Yes, chef Vinnie is now a Pikemaster!
Cale Teske
Chris Boyd
Bill Ferguson

A big Pikemasters' welcome to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most important news I have this month is our new meeting location. Lots of rumors have been circulating concerning the possible closure of the Eagles Lodge. As of now, they are only rumors. I have received no official news from their managers. As most of you know, our club has been searching for a new location for meetings that would allow our kids to attend. The search is over. Our next meeting, May 4th, will be held at the Elks' Lodge at 934 Lewis Ave. in Billings. Our kids are welcome at the meeting. The Elks has also invited us to have dinner at their dining room before our meeting. The dining room opens at 5:30 p.m. Prices are quite reasonable and the food is great! I know a few people who will never miss another meeting now that food is available! The bar will also be open to all of us. A vote will be taken at the end of the night to decide if we want to make the relocation permanent.

We will have a guest speaker at the May 4th meeting. Roger Bauer, owner of Willow Bend Flies, will give a demo on fly-fishing for pike. Roger is well known in Montana for his expertise in handling a fly rod and in tying his own flies for every species. He will show us what weight rod, line, and leader material to use. He will also show us how to tie his famous "bunny fly."

I also want to put a stop to another rumor that is floating around the state. Montana Pikemasters is NOT promoting rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, or any other kind of trout to be raised in the new Ft. Peck hatchery. This club, along with the majority of the local Walleyes Unlimited club members, had understood that the new hatchery would support all major game species in Ft. Peck Lake. We all fish for lake trout. A Bill was passed in the last Legislature banning lakers. Lakers can survive without any fry being raised locally. This club will support the new hatchery no matter what is raised there. It has been designated as a warm water hatchery and will remain so. Our main concern is to formulate a funding plan that will run the hatchery at 150% - not the advertised 60%. Let's get it up and running now without having to worry about any yearly funding problems.

See you all at the Elks, Thursday, May 4, at 7:00

Good luck in your fishing,

                             -- Tom Reiter

P.S. We only have 4 tickets left for the paddlefish outfit. A lucky winner will be drawn Thursday!
