A message from
the president
Oct. 31, 2003 -- Snow is falling and the temperatures are dropping. It looks like we might be putting the old boat away for the winter. Or will we?
If we have another winter like we have had the past several years, maybe we will still be able to get some last minute fishing in before ice-up. I hope so, because I, for one, am not ready to end the open water season quite yet.
DON'T FORGET! Our December 6 Banquet time is coming upon us. Get your tickets and get those friends of yours to come with you. We have been very fortunate to get Vince Yannone to be our emcee, thanks to the efforts of Mark Henckel, outdoor editor of the Billings Gazette. Vince is a well known speaker around the state for his fishing conservation efforts and promoting kids fishing.
If you have never heard this man speak, you will be entertained and well-informed about fish and fishing in Montana.
Party Pig Catering will be doing the cooking and it promises to be a big hog feast, with all you can eat pike, potatoes, salads, rolls and deserts. I hope this event will become our biggest fund raiser ever so that we can do more towards pike conservation. As a member of the Montana Pikematers, I hope that you will support your club in this effort. Besides, your going to get a very good meal to boot.
So come to the meeting and pick up those tikets for your family and your friends, or call me at 656-4079 and I can hand-deliver them or you can mail your check to Montana Pikemasters, P.O. Box 30551, Billings, MT 59107 and we'll get them right out to you.
There were only six of us that went up to Ft. Peck on Oct. 18-19, but we had a great time and caught a bunch of catfish, lake trout, ling, pike and even a sauger. The tempurature was a very comfortable -- 75 degrees -- and the sun was shinning to make for a couple of real nice days on the water. Even the wind wasn't a problem. We fished the river from just below the dam to 6 or 7 miles down river and the dredge cuts. Those of you that were unable to make it missed out on a great weekend. But don't despair, if we do have some more warmer weather ahead, you can still head up and enjoy some great fishing. A bunch of us are planning a fishing trip to Keyhole next spring around the middle of May to the middle of June, so keep it in mind or mark it on your 2004 calender.
If you haven't heard yet, our web page has changed, so the old address that is listed on our newsletters is now incorrect. The new Web address is as follows: www.pikemasters.com. It is shorter and eaiser to remember. Mark Henckel, a good friend of the PikeMasters who is known for putting together several other outdoor web pages, rebuilt ours to make it more user-friendly. So check it out, I think you will agree that it is a very nice job.
The tournament application to the state has been sent in and we'll be letting you know as soon as we hear back from them. The 2004 tournament has been proposed to be at Hell Creek Marina, the third weekend of June. The Keyhole tournament will be approximately the same time as this year.
At last month's meeting, we talked about going up to Great Falls on Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, to the Montana Hunting and Fishing Outdoor Show, to further promote our club and its goals. The cost of this show is $230.00 for an 8x10 booth and electricity is included. It was voted on and passed by the members at the meeting to attend this show. Those of us that are going up to work the booth will be paying our own expenses. I hope that you members who live in Great Falls will be able to attend and bring your friends so that they can check us out and join the club.
See you at the meeting. -- Bob Rausch
