But, among the four walleyes he caught that day, there was a trophy, a 31-inch, 12.06-pounder, which won the Camp Mak-A-Dream Walleye Benefit held on Canyon Ferry Reservoir out of the Silos Recreation Area. The afternoon walleye edged out of a very fat 30.5-inch walleye caught early Saturday morning by Eric Haumschild, of Great Falls, in the event where fish length was the determining factor in final placing. Each walleye’s length was converted to pounds on a standard length-to-weight chart which left Rhyneer with 12.06 pounds and Haumschild with 11.42 pounds. With a huge girth, Haumschild’s fish actually ran 12.3 pounds on a scale. Both big walleyes were released in lively condition after measuring in the benefit, sponsored by Walleyes Forever and Montana PikeMasters. Both were caught near the dust-abatement dikes on the south end of the lake. Townsend boat captain Jim Banta’s team took third place with a 25.5-inch walleye and Bozeman boat captain Marvin Hansen’s team took fourth with a 25.0-inch walleye. A total of 191 anglers in 52 boats participated in the benefit. All of the $50 per boat tourney fees were donated to Camp Mak-A-Dream at Gold Creek, which serves youths and young adults with cancer. The other $10 in the $60 entry fees will go to help Canyon Ferry fisheries work like the Christmas tree reefs placed in the lake for perch spawning habitat. Between boat fees, raffle drawings, and other donations, a check for $4,200 will be sent to Camp Mak-A-Dream and $520 will go to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for Canyon Ferry fisheries. Among the donors to the event were Bob’s Thriftway of Townsend, Townsend Marine, Townsend Electric, Silos RV and KOA, Headwaters Seat Covers of Three Forks, Dan Spence Taxidermy of Bozeman, Rich’s Tackle of Three Forks, Billings Scheels, Sportsmen’s Edge Bait Company of Helena, Western Security Bank of Billings, Montana Outdoor Radio Show, A Treasured Friend of Billings, Montana Lottery, Peggy Lawver of Laurel, CarMel Collectibles on RubyLane.com, Mark St. Onge of Reser’s Foods, Barry and Scott Helmbrecht of Billings, Moore Candy Company of Billings, Bob Johnson of Billings, Jim Lorenz of Billings and clowns Deanna Jones and Cherri Shinaberger, both of Townsend.
