Fishermen helping fishermen in a time of great need

Father Francis' Tsunami photos

From Father Francis Guntipilly

Father Francis Guntipilly sent these photos which were taken
in the wake of the Dec. 26, 2004 Tsunami:

The picture of destruction from Kanyakumari. Note the boat on the roof.
It indicates the force of the wave.

This picture shows the matchbox-like temporary sheds which are being put up for households (irrespective of the size of the family). Families are expected to live in these temporary shelters for up to a year. The material used is a soft roofing material made out of pitch and hard board.

The picture shows a community discussion in progress. Rajendran (CHC) is seen talking to the people. In this area we organized the people to demand a loan from the Bank immediately so that some activity could be initiated like
catching crabs, etc., in backwaters by the women.

The picture shows the destruction to a church in Kanyakumari district.

This picture shows the volunteers of a medical team working in a make-shift medical camp at Keelmoovarkarai, Nagapattinam district.

The faith of the survivors sustains them as they seek to rebuild their lives. This photo shows a tsunami-affected woman praying in a temple on Pongal,
a major harvest festival that is celebrated in Tamilnadu,
was taken in Kanyakumari district.
